Unity Hospice Celebrates November as National Hospice and Palliative Care Month

(De Pere, Wisconsin) –Unity Hospice is joining organizations across the nation to raise awareness about the benefits of hospice and palliative care in recognition of National Hospice and Palliative Care Month.

For more than 40 years, hospice has helped provide comfort and dignity to millions of people, allowing them to spend their final months at home, surrounded by their loved ones. Hospices ensure that pain management, therapies, and treatments all support a plan of care that is centered on the person’s goals. This care also provides emotional support and advice to help family members become confident caregivers and adjust to the future with grief support for up to a year.

“It is essential that people understand that hospice and palliative care is not giving up, it is not the abandonment of care, and it is not reserved for the imminently dying,” said Edo Banach, president and CEO of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. “Hospice is a successful model of person- centered care that brings hope, dignity and compassion when they are most needed. This is one reason that the national My Hospice Campaign was launched in 2018.”

Every year, nearly 1.5 million Medicare beneficiaries receive care from hospices in this country, reports NHPCO. Hospice is unique in that it offers an interdisciplinary team approach to treatment. Caring for the whole person allows the team to address each patient’s unique needs and challenges.

“Hospice adds life to days when you can’t add days to life”, said Alisa Gerke, Unity’s Executive Director. “In addition to helping a patient have the best day possible, hospice is about making a caregiver’s day more manageable, a grieving spouse’s day a little easier and a volunteer’s day more purposeful.”

Hospices are also some of the best providers of community-based palliative care. Palliative care delivers expertise to improve quality of life and relief from pain. It can be provided at any time during an illness – during and after treatment, from diagnosis on.

More information about hospice, palliative care, and advance care planning is available by contacting Unity Hospice at 920-338-111/www.unityhospice.org or from NHPCO’s CaringInfo.org.

Real Men Wear Pink

“October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I am supporting the fight against breast cancer as one of the Real Men Wear Pink candidates. This fight is personal to me. My wife is a breast cancer survivor and it is through ongoing efforts like this that help fund research, that my wife is still with me today. As a symbol of our joint struggle through cancer, I created an imagine called Courage Heart. This imagine symbolizes the fight that so many go through with cancer.

Today I am selling apparel online using the Courage Heart symbol. $5 from each item sold will be donated to the American Cancer Society to support their fight against breast cancer. Not only do you get some really cool apparel to wear, you are also helping to fight breast cancer. To learn more about the Courage Heart story go to https://deanraasch.com/story-of-the-courage-heart/.”
