Independence Day Celebration

This past weekend I had the privilege of being invited to Governor Scott Walker’s Independence Day Celebration. This was the sixth annual event, and continues to be a tradition that celebrates our history, patriotism and independence. The celebration is not to promote politics and ideology, but rather an opportunity to acknowledge American pride. The atmosphere of the barbecue was light and festive, and was held at the governor’s executive residence which has been home to Wisconsin governors since 1928. There were live music performances by the Eddie Butts band and plenty of food and drinks to go around. I appreciated the opportunity I had not only to catch up with past co-workers and friends, but also to network and make new ones. I hope to attend the event in the future as it is a reminder that regardless of your ideology, political party identification, values, beliefs, demographics and the like, each and every citizen should make it a priority to get involved.

Waseda Farms

Congratulations to Waseda Farms on earning our Business of the Week! This certified organic farm and market was founded in 2008 and introduced to De Pere in April 2014. We got the chance to talk to Waseda Farms president Matt Lutsey to learn more about the Waseda Farms team and their market. Waseda Farms offers high quality certified organic grass-fed Black Angus beef, pork, chicken, and eggs. Their products are featured in over 40 restaurants and retail locations. Waseda farms is Northeastern Wisconsin’s only local and organic focused market and deli, featuring products from over 100 local farms, artisans and producers. Produce is not the only local aspect of the business: Waseda Farms gives back to the community every day. Their Save a Bag and You Buy We Give programs, non-profit donations, and annual scholarships are just a few ways Waseda Farms gives back. This year the family – owned business donated over $30,000 to local non-profits.

“De Pere is a close-knit community that continues to grow.”

When we asked Matt “Why De Pere?” he told us the community of like-minded individuals and network of small businesses that work together and support one another are reasons why Waseda Farms is proud to call De Pere home.

Capital Credit Union

Capital Credit Union is a local financial institution headquartered in Green Bay, with a De Pere branch on Fifth Street. As a credit union, they provide a wide variety of financial services including, but not limited to: savings and checking accounts, mortgages, financial advising, and auto and commercial loans. They have assets of more than $1.1 billion and serve more than 100,000 members throughout Northeast Wisconsin. Their tagline is “Doing the Right Thing” and they work to incorporate this mission into each facet of their business model, earning them this week’s Business of the Week!

It all started back in 2004, when De Pere’s Fox Point Credit Union merged with Pioneer Credit Union. After another merger in 2014, they became Capital Credit Union. While their name has changed, their focus to serve their local community did not. From fun in-branch contests to supporting area charities, such as the Altrusa House and Exceptional Equestrians, this branch bleeds De Pere – West and East.

Community outreach is a priority at Capital Credit Union and they engage through volunteering, sponsorships, and other avenues. In 2016, Captial Credit Union donated billboard space to a local homeless shelter to help bring greater awareness and visibility to the needs of the non-profit. Powerful statements dotted the community, such as “Heading home? Think about those who can’t.” This campaign helped narrate a clear message about the impact of homelessness in the Green Bay metro area. This media donation came through a growing partnership with the homeless shelter through employee driven fundraisers, shelter tours, renovation projects and member donation drives. It hass become an employee passion to change the community conversation about homelessness.
