De Pere Area Chamber of Commerce membership dues are deductible as an ordinary business expense under IRS rules — the same way you deduct other costs of doing business. They are not deductible as a charitable contribution, because the chamber is a 501(c)(6) membership organization, not a charity. If you want a charitable deduction, that comes from donating to the De Pere Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation (DPACCF), which is a separate 501(c)(3) entity. Confirm the current deductibility rules with your tax advisor.
Do I have to be located in De Pere to join?
No. The De Pere Area Chamber of Commerce serves 11 communities across Brown County. Roughly half of the chamber's 290+ member businesses are located outside De Pere proper. If you operate in De Pere or the surrounding area, or if you do business with De Pere-area customers and employers, membership applies to you.
I joined once and nothing happened. Why would this time be different?
Passive membership rarely produces results. Active membership — attending Morning Business Brew, volunteering for the Ambassador Committee, showing up at Let's Lunch, joining a committee — does. The chamber's role is to open the door; what happens on the other side depends on how often you walk through it. New members at Classic and above get a new-member orientation and a ribbon cutting, which is your fastest introduction to the network. What's the difference between the chamber and the Foundation?
The De Pere Area Chamber of Commerce (501(c)(6)) is a membership organization. You pay dues, you get member benefits — directory listing, events, networking, advocacy. The De Pere Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation (DPACCF, 501(c)(3)) is a separate charitable entity that runs five named community programs: Fairways for Veterans & Youth (with VFW Post 2113), youth development, women in business, community faith, and civic connection. Foundation donations are tax-deductible charitable contributions. Membership dues are not. You can be a member without donating to the Foundation, and you can donate to the Foundation without being a member — though most businesses do both.
Isn't the chamber just for big companies?
No. The most popular membership level — Community at $650/year — is built for growing businesses. Classic at $300/year is built specifically for businesses under 25 employees. Citizen at $100/year is built for individuals. The chamber has 290+ member businesses across every size category. If anything, small businesses get proportionally more value from the network because the chamber's events, programs, and advocacy give a solo operator access to relationships and policy influence that would take years to build independently.
I already get leads from Google. Why do I need the chamber?
Google tells people you exist. A chamber listing tells them you're invested in the community — and independent research by the Schapiro Group found consumers are 80% more likely to purchase from a business they know is a chamber member. That's a signal Google cannot send. The chamber also gives you referral relationships with 290+ local businesses, members-only pricing across a full calendar of events, and advocacy representation at the City of De Pere and Brown County that no search ranking provides. Google and the chamber answer different questions for your customers.
